Happy Love Day! Everyday should be Love Day, shouldn’t it? It’s a day to express love, give love, receive love. To eat red hots shaped like hearts, give red roses and boxes of the good chocolates, to show someone how much you love someone. When I think of Valentine’s Day, I know it is about romantic love, but all I can think about is God’s love for us. This is obviously not romantic love, it is so much more than that. It is not just brotherly love, a love of the will, a love in return, a love because we’re loveable. It is a pure, incomprehensible, blood flowing red, heart on fire, sweet pursuit, lay down your life kind of loves. All loves rolled into one love divine.
Charles Wesley penned this love poem in the 1700s. It can’t be said any better today. Soak in these beautiful words.
Love divine, all loves excelling,
joy of heav’n to earth come down,
fix in us Thy humble dwelling;
all Thy faithful mercies crown!
Jesus, Thou art all compassion,
pure, unbounded love Thou art;
visit us with Thy salvation;
enter every trembling heart.
Breathe, O breathe Thy loving Spirit
into every troubled breast!
Let us all in Thee inherit,
let us find the promised rest.
Take away our love of sinning;
Alpha and Omega be;
end of faith, as its beginning,
set our hearts at liberty.
Come, Almighty to deliver;
let us all Thy life receive;
suddenly return and never,
nevermore Thy temples leave.
Thee we would be always blessing,
serve Thee as Thy hosts above;
pray, and praise Thee without ceasing,
glory in Thy perfect love.
Finish then, Thy new creation;
pure and spotless let us be;
let us see Thy great salvation
perfectly restored in Thee.
Changed from glory into glory,
till in heav’n we take our place,
till we cast our crowns before Thee,
lost in wonder, love, and praise.
Has His love entered our trembling hearts? Has His love set our hearts free? Do we glory in His perfect love? Do we get lost in the wonder, love and praise?
